Over the last decades, decentralized management of natural resources has been strongly emphasized as a relevant solution to improve the management of renewable natural resources and to tackle the global environmental crisis, including biodiversity loss and global warming.

There are however many ways to implement “decentralized management”, ranging from pure private property or voluntary certification to community management or co-management between local cooperatives and governments. This workshop engages 3 scientific disciplines, namely remote sensing, human geography and economics, to analyse what are the relevant types of decentralized management for which contexts.

The workshop will especially focus on forest in developing countries, considering their ecological conditions, their socio-economic role and power relations that may arise around their management.
